    ARTIST STATEMENT  - EN (2015)

I grew up in an environment where the line between family life and creative expression was thin. These two elements meet in my work in an often humorous and performative way. In my practice I relate my work to folk art as I see similarities with the expressions from my youth. What appeals to me is the connection to everyday life which is communicated through an object. I treat my works as artefacts of my own imaginary world. I am interested in the way the creative process, the act and the craftsmanship of it can be a subject for the work. By taking those elements of the production process as subject I attempt to reflect on the social context or larger environment the work is situated in.

In my research I am focused on the dominant attitude of the western art world to not western cultural backgrounds. In a museum setting artefacts are transformed into commodities, constructing a tangible and visible history by presenting them in glass cases. Only by referring to what they once were, the artefacts seem frozen in space and time. By liberating them from the museum setting I try to defrost the artefacts to alter the contemporary potential of each object depending on the location and the occasion in which the object appears or reappears.
