  2. WORK DESCRIPTION (2017)
    Katrein Breukers interviews Katrein Breukers

How would you describe your practice?

I work primarily with sculpture, with often an element of a performance during the opening. I make quite site-specific work, using the whole space. I am interested in the fluidity of sculpture, the sculpture can turn into a stage for performance.

How do you think about your sculptures?

I am interested in the duality of spirit and matter. By combining elements that refer to voodoo, daily life and fashion culture I created sculptures that inherit a moment in which the sculptures can be activated in relation to one of these aspects. A wall piece can transform into performable object. I think about my sculptures as objects to interact with. The sculpture (Les Statues Meurent Aussi, 2015) appears to be an organic protuberance of the floor, I posed myself as an expanded part of the sculpture. The masks (image 07) where you can look through or put your hand in (Fresh Masks and Sweet Caps, 2017)

    And what about humor?

I represent myself within an installation of protest art but do not suggest any alternative. The protest itself relies the reality, just as humor also relate. It’s not my intention to reproduce clichés, with humor I investigate what clichés mean to us today.
